Dr. Alfonso completed his undergraduate degree at Yale College in New Haven, Connecticut and his medical degree from Yale University. He joined Bascom Palmer and the University of Miami School of Medicine in 1981 as a resident. He then completed fellowships in corneal and external diseases, ophthalmic pathology, and research at the Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary of Harvard Medical School. Following this training, Alfonso returned to Miami where he joined the faculty of Bascom Palmer in 1986. He served as Bascom Palmer’s interim chairman in 2007-08 and was appointed chairman in 2009. Every year, during Dr. Alfonso’s service as chair, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute has been ranked the number one program in ophthalmology in the United States by U.S. News & World Report.
